As I made my way through the rolling hills, I was greeted by the sight of golden fields of wheat waving in the gentle breeze, dotted with vibrant wildflowers. The chalky white cliffs of the Seven Sisters were visible in the distance, creating a stunning backdrop against the deep blue sky. It was a bright and sunny day, which made everything seem even more vibrant.
Along the path, I encountered several fellow walkers, all enjoying the beauty of the countryside. One couple, who were also from England, had just moved to the area and were eager to learn about the local history. I shared some information about the ancient burial mounds and the historic Beacon, which offers breathtaking views and dates back to the Iron Age. They were particularly interested in the connection between the landscape and the various battles that were fought in the region.
I also met an elderly gentleman who was a local historian. He was out with his dog and had a wealth of stories about Alfriston’s past, including its connections to the English Civil War and its historic pub, the Star Inn, which dates back to the 16th century. He told me about the village’s role in smuggling during the 18th century and how it has evolved over the years.
As I continued my walk, I stopped at the quaint St. Andrew’s Church, famous for its beautiful Norman architecture. The peaceful churchyard was a perfect place to take a moment to reflect.
I concluded my walk by stopping at a local café for a slice of homemade cake and a refreshing cup of tea. It was a lovely way to wrap up a day filled with history, nature, and wonderful conversations. Each walk I take always seems to bring something new and exciting, and I can't wait for my
