As I set off from the quaint village of Bourton-on-the-Water, known as the "Venice of the Cotswolds" due to its picturesque low bridges over the River Windrush, I was immediately struck by the beauty of the stone cottages. Many of them date back to the 16th century, built from the local honey-colored limestone, which gives an almost fairy-tale quality to the scenery.
Walking along the riverbank, I stopped to watch a family of ducks leisurely paddling through the water. There were also several small, independent shops selling local crafts and delicious homemade treats. I couldn't resist popping into a lovely little bakery where I met the owner, a woman named Mary, who was kind enough to share her recipe for traditional scones. She told me about her family's history in the area, and it was lovely to hear how the village has evolved over the years while retaining its charm.
Continuing my walk, I ventured onto a footpath leading up to the hills, where I was greeted with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. I spotted a few sheep grazing peacefully, and I took a moment to enjoy the tranquility before heading to the nearby village of Lower Slaughter. The walk along the river to this village was simply stunning, with a picturesque old mill and a lovely stone bridge.
In Lower Slaughter, I met a couple of fellow walkers—a retired couple from London, who were exploring the Cotswolds for the first time. We chatted about the best walking routes and shared our favorite travel experiences. They told me about their adventures exploring other historical sites in England, which inspired me to add a few more locations to my own travel list.
