As I strolled along the banks of the River Windrush, I was greeted by the sight of quaint stone bridges and traditional Cotswold stone buildings. The golden-hued architecture was a delight against the backdrop of bright autumn leaves. I stopped to have a moment by the river, watching as ducks paddled lazily through the water, and families enjoyed picnics on the riverbanks.
Continuing my walk, I made my way to the nearby village of Upper Slaughter. The name intrigued me, as "slaughter" derives from the Old English word for "slope or muddy place." This village was a hidden gem, with its serene atmosphere and charming cottages. I met a lovely couple who were also exploring the area; they shared their enthusiasm for local history and told me about the historic church there, St. Peter's, which dates back to the 12th century. We exchanged stories about our favorite walks, and they recommended a few hidden spots I hadn't known about.
After leaving Upper Slaughter, I ventured through scenic fields dotted with sheep and the occasional ancient oak tree. The views were breathtaking, with rolling hills stretching out in the distance. I made a brief stop at a small, family-run tea shop in one of the villages, where I enjoyed a slice of homemade cake and a cup of tea while chatting with the owner. She regaled me with stories of the area’s history and the changes she had witnessed over the years.
