As I strolled along the River Windrush, I could hear the gentle trickle of water, and the trees lining the banks were starting to change color with the onset of autumn. The vibrant reds and golds created a stunning backdrop. I paused to take in the scenery, and I was greeted by a local family who were enjoying a picnic by the river. They shared some tips about the best local spots to visit, including the Model Village, which is a mini replica of Bourton-on-the-Water, built in the 1930s.
Continuing my walk, I left the village and ventured into the surrounding countryside. The fields were dotted with sheep, and I caught a glimpse of a deep blue sky, making for perfect walking weather. Along the way, I met an older gentleman named Mr. Thompson, who was out walking his dog. He regaled me with stories of the area’s history, telling me about how the Cotswolds played a significant role in the wool trade during the 14th century. He pointed out a nearby stone barn that had once been a crucial part of that industry.
I also came across a small church, St. Lawrence's, with its beautiful churchyard filled with ancient graves. It was a peaceful spot, and I spent some time reading the inscriptions on the stones, fascinated by the stories of lives lived long ago.
As I made my way back to Bourton, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the beauty I had experienced. The combination of history, nature, and the kindness of the people I met made it a truly memorable walk. It’s these little adventures
