As I set off from the charming village of Lewes, I was immediately greeted by the sight of the iconic Lewes Castle towering above the town. It dates back to 1040 and has such a rich history surrounding it, especially with the famous Battle of Lewes in 1264. The views from the hilltop are breathtaking, looking out over the winding River Ouse and the surrounding landscape.
Continuing along the trail, I passed fields dotted with sheep and old flint walls, which really capture the essence of the Downs. The vibrant autumn leaves provided a beautiful backdrop. I made my way to a viewpoint overlooking the Seven Sisters cliffs – it's a sight that never fails to impress. The white chalk cliffs against the deep blue sea are absolutely stunning, especially as the sun was starting to lower in the sky, casting a golden light over everything.
Along the way, I met a couple of fellow walkers, an older gentleman and his daughter, who were visiting from London. We struck up a conversation about our favorite walks in England and shared stories about our adventures. They were particularly interested in the history of the areas we were passing through, so I was more than happy to share a few snippets about the historical significance of the area, including the fact that the South Downs were once crucial for ancient trade routes.
As I reached the end of my walk at Eastbourne, I treated myself to a warm cup of tea and a slice of Sussex cake at a quaint café by the seafront. It was a perfect way to reflect on the day and the beauty of the English countryside.
