I started my walk in Bourton-on-the-Water, often referred to as the "Venice of the Cotswolds" because of its lovely riverside setting. The River Windrush flows right through the village, and I enjoyed watching ducks paddling by and families picnicking along the banks. The stone bridges crossing the river are quintessentially Cotswold, and the architecture of the buildings, with their honey-colored limestone, created a lovely backdrop as I strolled through the village.
As I wandered through the narrow streets, I popped into a quaint little tea shop to sample some traditional scones with clotted cream and jam. The owner, a lovely woman named Margaret, shared fascinating stories about the history of the village and how it has evolved over the decades. She mentioned that during WWII, Bourton was often used for training exercises, and some of the locals even acted as guides for the soldiers.
After leaving Bourton-on-the-Water, I took a scenic walking trail that led me through lush green fields and along the edge of a gentle hill, where I was greeted by stunning views of the surrounding countryside. The wildflowers were in full bloom, and I spotted a variety of butterflies flitting about. I even met a couple of hikers on the trail—an older gentleman and his daughter—who were visiting from London. We struck up a conversation about our favourite hiking spots and exchanged tips on hidden gems in the area.
Eventually, I made my way to Upper Slaughter, a tiny village that feels like stepping back in time. The tranquil atmosphere here is truly special, and the historic mill by the river was a highlight. I took some time to sit on a bench and just soak it all in—the sound of the water
