I started my journey in the quaint village of Bourton-on-the-Water, often referred to as the "Venice of the Cotswolds" due to its lovely little river running through the village. The low stone bridges and cute tea shops created a delightful atmosphere. As I strolled along the riverbank, I met an elderly couple sitting on a bench, enjoying the peaceful view. They shared stories of their years visiting the village and pointed me towards a hidden path that leads to a less-travelled part of the countryside.
Following their advice, I veered off the main trail and found myself surrounded by sprawling fields and rolling hills, dotted with sheep. It was incredibly serene. I passed a small woodland area where I encountered a group of enthusiastic bird watchers, excitedly sharing their observations of the local wildlife. It was fascinating to hear them talk about the different species they had spotted that day.
As I continued, I reached the village of Upper Slaughter, which felt like stepping back in time. The stone cottages were beautifully preserved, and the sound of a gentle stream complemented the serene atmosphere. I took a moment to visit the old church and admired its architecture, reflecting on the history of the area and the generations of inhabitants who have come and gone.
Along the way, I also came across a lovely local café where I stopped for a slice of homemade cake and a cup of tea. The owner was very friendly and shared insights about the best walking routes in the area, recommending a few hidden gems that I added to my list for future visits.
