As I walked, I found myself surrounded by those iconic honey-colored stone cottages, many of which date back hundreds of years. I strolled through the village of Bourton-on-the-Water, where the River Windrush runs through, creating a charming scene with its little bridges and willow trees. It’s often referred to as the "Venice of the Cotswolds," and it’s easy to see why. The sound of the water flowing was incredibly soothing, and it felt serene walking along the riverbank.
A highlight of the walk was visiting a small local café where I met a lovely elderly couple, who were regulars there. They told me stories about their lives in the area, mentioning how they remembered the village back in the 1950s, when it was far less touristy. They shared tales of local traditions, like the annual scarecrow festival that draws visitors from far and wide. It was fascinating to hear their firsthand accounts of how the region has changed over the decades.
Continuing on my walk, I passed through vast fields dotted with sheep, a quintessential sight of the English countryside. I also came across a historic stone circle, which sparked my curiosity about the ancient practices that might have taken place there. It’s amazing to consider the history beneath our feet—this area has been inhabited for thousands of years, from prehistoric times through to the medieval period.
As I drew closer to my destination, I reached the village of Chipping Campden, known for its impressive wool church and the historic market hall.
