I started my walk in the charming village of Alfriston, with its iconic thatched cottages and the historic St. Andrew's Church. The village has a rich history, dating back to the 12th century, and it was fascinating to imagine the life of the people who lived there centuries ago. As I strolled through the village, I stopped at a lovely little tea shop to grab a scone and some clotted cream – a quintessentially English treat.
Continuing my walk, I encountered some friendly locals out enjoying the sunshine. One elderly gentleman, who introduced himself as Mr. Thompson, shared stories about his own walks on the Downs and mentioned how the area had changed over the years. He pointed out a nearby hill known as the Long Man of Wilmington, a mysterious figure carved into the hillside that has puzzled historians and archaeologists for centuries.
As I walked further, I passed through fields of wildflowers and met a group of hikers who were also enjoying the trail. We exchanged tips about the best spots to visit along the way and shared our love for the breathtaking scenery. It’s always refreshing to meet fellow walkers who have a passion for exploring the great outdoors.
Along the route, I also spotted a few ancient burial mounds and a Neolithic flint mine, which really brought home the deep history of the area. It’s incredible to think that people have walked these paths for thousands of years, and I felt a connection to the past through the landscapes we traversed.
As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the hills, I felt grateful for the opportunity to experience such beauty and history all in one day. The South Downs never fail to amaze me
