As I walked along the designated trails, I saw lush green fields dotted with sheep and ancient oak trees. The crisp autumn air was refreshing, and the vibrant hues of falling leaves created a stunning backdrop. I stopped at the iconic Lower Slaughter, another village that felt like stepping back in time. The old watermill there is a must-see, and it was fascinating to learn about how it once powered the local community.
Along the way, I chatted with a lovely couple who were also out enjoying the walk. They were locals and shared fascinating stories about the history of the area, including tales of the wool trade that flourished during the Middle Ages. They even pointed me to a hidden pub nearby, The Slaughters Country Inn, which they claimed served the best local ales.
I also visited St. Edward’s Church in Stow-on-the-Wold, which dates back to the 11th century. The churchyard was peaceful, with beautifully crafted gravestones and a stunning tree that must have been centuries old. I took my time to soak in the atmosphere, reflecting on how many lives had passed through this historical site.
Overall, the walk was a delightful blend of nature, history, and community. It reminded me of the rich tapestry of stories that England has to offer, and I can't wait for my next adventure!
