As I strolled along the river, I admired the lovely stone bridges and the traditional Cotswold stone cottages that lined the banks. Each building had its own character, and I was particularly taken by the lace-like stonework that seemed to tell stories of centuries past.
I decided to wander into the small museum dedicated to the history of the village. The curator, an elderly gentleman with a twinkle in his eye, shared fascinating tales about the local area. He spoke of how Bourton-on-the-Water had been a stop for stagecoaches in the 18th century and recounted stories of the bustling market that used to thrive there.
After leaving the museum, I continued my walk to the nearby village of Lower Slaughter. The name intrigued me, but the beauty of the village quickly dispelled any foreboding thoughts! The walk took me along a picturesque footpath lined with wildflowers and ancient trees. I encountered a few other walkers along the way, including a friendly couple from London. They had taken a weekend trip to escape the city and were enjoying the tranquility of the countryside.
In Lower Slaughter, I was drawn to the old watermill, which dates back to the 19th century. It was fascinating to learn how it used to be a working mill, grinding grain and providing sustenance for the local population. The sound of the waterwheel turning was mesmerizing, and I could almost imagine the rhythm of life as it once was.
