So when I first bought and moved onto my homestead years ago we wanted to setup a food forest along with pastures for our livestock. On only 10 acres that is more like half acre to acre size padlocks and not pastures which only leaves a small area of growing food and food forest.
The more we started to clear the land we had to run fence or plant the more we realized we already have a small food forest here naturally and that we just need to add a few things here and there that we want like veggie plants.
We have many large persimmon trees along with mimosa trees that will work great to start planting our squash and beans around. The mimosa trees have lots of herbal health uses and can even be used as teas along with the yaupon trees that we have which are the only natural form of caffeine where I am.
We also have tons of berries that grow here naturally to the point that they overgrow whole areas that need to end up being cleared and found things like prickly pear cactuses that are edible. Some of the berries are ready to go but it looks like about another week and it will be time to break out the 5 gal buckets to go pick berries.
We have added a few citrus trees also in past several years and tons of other things we have not even taken the time to identify. Add that to the massive amount of squirrels, rabbits and lots of really nice fat dove that like to feed in our padlocks and you can make a meal out of almost anything.
