Greetings all!
What a week! I have overbooked myself on projects and sadly realised I may have to work weekends to make timelines. Totally my fault, but when you have four clients begging for you to work on their book, it's tough to say no.
Saita didn’t wake with the usual smell of food but rather with a groan of pain from her aching arm. She knew from what Sash had told her, the nanites were working hard to gather stem cells to fix the damage done to her. It was the reason that she was constantly exhausted and tended to drop off to sleep as soon as she allowed her eyelids to remain closed for longer than a blink. She opened her eyes and blinked a few times at the harshness of the lights above her.
“Why is it so bright all the time” she mumbled.
“Saita?”
The young woman slowly rolled her head to her right and was somewhat shocked to see Myla sitting there looking sick with worry. It felt like a jolt of energy went through Saita as she suddenly remembered why she was in the hospital in the first place.
“Are you okay?” she asked as she sat up.
She regretted it instantly and had to fight for consciousness as her vision swam with pain at her sudden movement. Myla gently gripped places on Saita’s body that were not bandaged to lie her flat on the bed before starting to look for the lever that would raise the bed into a seated position. Once she was sure Saita was comfortable, she simply said. “I was never hurt, Saita. You and Bolx saw to that.”
“I don’t know what I would have done if you have gotten hurt.”
“Shh. You are chasing your heart rate up. Calm down. I’m fine, everyone is fine.”
Saita leaned back and closed her eyes for a few moments. It was then that she recalled the words that had hurt her so much in the past, and she clenched her teeth and tried to drown her emotions in pain as she clenched her left hand angrily.
“Don’t do that.” Said Myla gently as she leaned over to unclench her left hand.
“Don’t touch me.” Whispered Saita softly. “Please.”
Myla flinched at the harshness and whispered. “I…”
“No… just don’t I can’t do this now. I have other things I need to work on.”
“No!” said Myla sternly.
Taken aback, Saita could only look at her wearily. “No?”
“I encouraged you to bury everything last time, and I’m not going to let that happen again.”
“Myla please…”
“No. You don’t get to call me that. Do you understand? You don’t call me by that name.”
Saita wanted to argue, wanted to shout and tell the woman how badly her heart broke the day she had called her a monster, but every sane thought left her body as tears formed in her eyes and pain radiated from her chest.
“I made a mistake.” Hissed Myla. “And you can hate me for the rest of my life if it helps you, but I am not going to let you bottle up any more feelings. Tell me how you feel.”
Saita clenched her teeth and once more tried to fight her feelings.
“I’m sorry.” Whispered Myla as she gripped Saita’s cheeks and held onto them to look at her. “I was stupid and scared. I said the one thing I knew could hurt you, and I didn’t care about the damage. By the time I realised what I had said to you, it was far too late to make amends. I am sorry. Your father is sorry. He hasn’t spoken a word since he last saw you. What we did to you broke our hearts and broke your father’s spirit. I am not begging for forgiveness I just want you to tell me how you feel. Please.”
Saita couldn’t anymore. Everything from the last few years just collapsed around her. She gripped Myla’s hand with her left and wept until she had nothing left to give. She wanted to say something, anything but the emotions that she had buried for so long now just streamed from her in sobs and tears.
Pura hadn’t heard the conversation, but he felt the emotions and knew that Saita desperately wanted to speak, but she couldn’t. There had been too much bottled and so much more that needed to come out, but they were hidden behind memories.
“Shouldn’t we go in?” asked Doran.
“Don’t think there is much we can do.” Sighed Lardan. “This is a long time coming for Saita, and she needs this. Let her be weak for a few minutes with her mother.”
“General, she will stay for one year.” Said Pura as he got to his feet. “Let her heal. Prepare the boy if his family agrees. After that time, I will come to her again and ask if she wishes to return.”
Pura made to walk away, but Lardan stopped him. “She also wants to talk to you, Your Majesty.”
“Tomorrow is another day.” The King sighed. “Let her reconnect with her mother. Let her have a day where she can be weak and helpless like the child when she was first welcomed into the family. It will help her and Myla.”
“Then allow me to open my home to you, Doran, and the boy until we can iron out the details.” Said Lardan with a grin. “I believe Danna is making a roast for dinner.”
Sorry for the short update today. The next section is significantly longer and I didn't want the post to be too long.
For those of you who have never heard of Fell Dragon you can find Book 1 here, Book 2 here and the start of Book 3 here. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me. I love discussing my books!
As the series continues, it will combine with another book series I wrote. To avoid confusion about what is happening, introductory chapters will be introduced separately so that you don't have to be lost. However, these chapters will contain spoilers. You can find these chapters here:
