Economic sanctions are restrictions or penalties a country (mostly economic hegemon) or group of countries put on another country mostly to influence its policies.
Does sanction work?
Firstly when a country sanctions another country it may come in the form of trade barriers, assets freezing, financial sanctions like prohibiting transfer of funds or complete embargo like importing or exporting goods from the country.
Do countries go ahead and carry out those treats? Yes of course as we've seen with the United States against countries like
Iran
North Korea
Russia
Let's take a look at Iran
The United States sanctioned them for several reasons but mainly because of their nuclear programs due to the fears that they may threaten global security
But the question is has Iran stopped their Nuclear programs after all the harsh sanctions the answer is No.
Another country that was sanctioned by the United States is North Korea for mostly the same reason as Iran
Some of North Korea sanctions include
Ban on trade
Assets freezing and travel ban for North Korea leaders
Restrictions on financial transactions and access to international banks
But after all these sanctions did North Korea stop their nuclear programs the answer also is no
Same with Russia they invaded Ukraine and was sanctioned by the United States and several European countries but did they stop their military actions on Ukraine the answer is no
The purpose of sanction is to influence or pressure the government to change some policies and decisions of their countries.
If the purpose is not achieved does the decision make sense.
