When I think about what it means to be a good mother, I don’t think about being perfect. No mother has all the answers, gets everything right, or handles every situation calmly. To me, being a good mother is about loving your children, being there for them, and doing your best to guide them as they grow.
A good mother should be someone her children feel safe with. Someone they can talk to without being afraid of being judged. Children need to know that they can make mistakes, have bad days, ask difficult questions, or admit when something is bothering them and still know they are loved. Sometimes they don’t need advice at all. Sometimes they just need their mum to listen, give them a hug, and say, “I’m here.”
I also think it’s important to remember that every child is different. They have their own personalities, interests, strengths, and struggles. Being a mother isn’t about trying to turn your child into the person you imagined they would be. It’s about getting to know who they really are and helping them become comfortable with that person. Of course, we still have to teach them right from wrong, encourage good choices, and show them how to treat other people with kindness and respect.
And sometimes being a good mother means saying no. Love doesn’t mean giving children everything they ask for or protecting them from every difficult experience. Children need boundaries. They need to learn that their actions have consequences and that not every decision will go their way. Those lessons can be hard for both the child and the parent, but they are part of growing up.
I believe children also learn a lot by watching their mothers. They notice how we speak to people, how we handle stress, how we apologise when we are wrong, and how we treat ourselves. We can tell them to be kind and honest, but those lessons mean much more when they see us trying to live by them ourselves.
At the same time, I don’t believe a mother should completely lose herself in motherhood. Looking after yourself isn’t selfish. Having time to rest, seeing friends, enjoying your interests, or simply having some quiet time can make a huge difference. You can love your children more than anything and still need a break sometimes. That doesn’t make you a bad mother. It makes you human.
For me, some of the most important parts of motherhood are found in ordinary moments. Sitting together after a long day. Listening to a story you have probably heard a hundred times. Helping with homework, making their favourite meal. Comforting them when they are upset. Celebrating something they are proud of. These moments may seem small, but they are often the things children remember.
There will always be days when we lose our patience, question our choices, or wonder if we are doing enough. I think every mother has moments like that. Being a good mother doesn’t mean never making mistakes. It means being willing to admit when you have got something wrong, learn from it, and try again the next day.
I don’t think children need a perfect mother. They need a mother who loves them, listens to them, guides them, sets boundaries, supports them, and keeps showing up, even on the difficult days.
Thanks for checking on my blog and have a wonderful day
