I remember very well the day I set out to read this book for the first time, my mother was handing it to me and I was about 14 years old. She told me: "it is a very beautiful book and it is about some rabbits on a hill". She was right about the rabbits, what she didn't tell me was that it would be a little traumatic to read a novel that seems to be very tender and that is actually how a rabbit society is organized within a burrow.

Recuerdo muy bien el día que me dispuse a leer este libro por primera vez, mi madre me lo entregaba en mis manos y tendría yo como 14 años, me parecía un libro muy grande, nunca me había leído algo así. Ella me dijo: "es un libro muy bonito y se trata de unos conejos en una colina". Tenía razón acerca de los conejos, lo que no me dijo es que sería un poquito traumático leer una novela que aparenta ser muy tierna y que en realidad es como se organiza una sociedad de conejos dentro de una madriguera.

The Plot

The plot is about a group of rabbits that travel through a small stretch of the English countryside. If you look at the cover and read the synopsis, it might not attract anyone but a pre-teen. But the fact is that this is a great story, full of rich characters, and as I said, it left me rather surprised because I found even a little violence in it.

You can read the book just for the story: apparently, the author wrote the book from stories he told his children on long car trips, and it can still easily serve that purpose. But the richness of his characters leads to many interesting analogies with human life without anthropomorphizing the characters, they are still wild rabbits in a field. The challenges they face are the size of a rabbit, the ideas about the outside world are similar to those of a rabbit, the philosophical ideas seem rabid, and Adams brings together many of our anthropomorphized ideas (I had trouble writing this word many times, LOL) about rabbits with the reality of rabbits in a surprisingly coherent way. It has some flaws. For example, the female characters only appear in the book a few times, although I think Adams shows some sensitivity in his depictions.

La trama trata sobre un grupo de conejos que viajan por un pequeño tramo de la campiña inglesa. Si se ponen a ver la portada y se lee la sinopsis, pudiera no atraer nadie más que a un preadolescente. Pero el hecho es que esta es una gran historia, llena de ricos personajes, y como ya dije, me dejó más bien un poco sorprendida porque me encontré hasta con un poco de violencia en ella.

Puedes leer el libro sólo por la historia: aparentemente, el autor escribió el libro a partir de historias que les contaba a sus hijos en unos largos viajes en auto, y aún así puede servir fácilmente para ese propósito. Pero la riqueza de sus personajes lleva a muchas analogías interesantes con la vida humana sin llegar a antropomorfizar a los personajes, siguen siendo conejos silvestres en una campiña. Los desafíos que enfrentan son del tamaño de un conejo, las ideas sobre el mundo exterior son similares a las de un conejo, las ideas filosóficas parecen rabiadas, y Adams reúne muchas de nuestras ideas antropomorfizadas (me costó escribir esta palabra muchas veces, LOL) sobre los conejos con la realidad de los conejos de una manera sorprendentemente coherente. The Characters:

I would like to introduce you to all the characters in the novel, but there are so many (we already know how rabbits reproduce) and this review would be unnecessarily long. So I will name a few:

• Hazel: the chief rabbit and protagonist of the novel. He leads the journey and the whole group of rabbits as they search for their new home.

• Fiver: he has visions and senses everything that may happen in the future. He is the younger brother of hazelnut tree.

• BigWig: a former Oswla officer and the largest rabbit in the group, he is brave and very strong.

• Blackberry: a very intelligent rabbit, thanks to his brain they can realize many things and can overcome some limitations during the day.

• General Woundwort: The main antagonist of the novel, is a visibly very big rabbit, even more than a wig, he is a villain par excellence with autocratic tyrant qualities and very hateful.

Me gustaría presentarles a todos los personajes de la novela, pero son muchísimos (ya sabemos como se reproducen los conejos) y esta reseña se haría innecesariamente larga. Así que les nombraré unos pocos:

• Avellano, el conejo jefe y protagonista de la novela. Lidera el viaje y a todo el grupo de conejos cuando buscan su nuevo hogar.
• Quinto: tiene visiones y presiente todo lo que puede pasar en el futuro. Es el hermano menor de avellano.
• Pelucón: un ex oficial de la Oswla y el conejo más grande del grupo, es valiente y muy fuerte.
• Zarzamora: un conejo muy inteligente, gracias a su cerebro pueden darse cuenta de muchas cosas y pueden sortear algunas limitaciones durante la jornada.
• General Vulneraria: El principal antagonista de la novela, es un conejo visiblemente muy grande, incluso más que pelucón, es un villano por excelencia con dotes de tirano autocrático y muy odioso.

The author:

Richard Adams:

Born in 1920, he studied modern history at Worcester College, turning the stories he told his daughters into a very successful children's novel and a must-read modern classic. There was a film adaptation and it was also turned into a Netflix mini-series (which I haven't seen yet but after hearing about it I was curious to know how it turned out). But as a good classic, I recommend everyone to read the book. I did it as a teenager and I did it again and they were two different ways of understanding it, even though it was not written to have a prodigious teaching, but rather a story from a worker of the ministry of agriculture doing a rabbit story.

Nacido en 1920, estudió historia moderna en Worcester College, convirtió los cuentos que les contaba a sus hijas en una novela para niños muy exitosa, y un clásico moderno obligado que todos deberían leer. Hubo una adaptación al cine y también fue convertido en una miniserie de Netflix (que aún no he visto pero luego de enterarme de esto me entró la curiosidad de saber que tal). Pero como buen clásico, les recomiendo a todos que lean el libro, lo hice de adolescente y lo volví a hacer y fueron dos formas distintas de entenderlo, así no haya sido escrito para tener una enseñanza produnda, sino más bien un cuento desde un trabajador del ministerio de agricultura haciendo un cuento de conejos.
