Hola, mis amigos. Que placer saludarlos nuevamente.

Hoy quiero hablarles de uno de los tantos sitios emblemáticos de La Habana. Un lugar que no pasa inadvertido para nadie por su tamaño y majestuosidad. Fue uno de los inmuebles que más me impresionaron cuando me mude a la capital, por eso lo visité en más de una ocasión. En la Calle Línea, entre C y D, se encuentra la tranquila parroquia del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús del Vedado y Carmelo. Tiempo atrás solía tener siempre su puerta lateral abierta, ya no se ve así en estos tiempos. Hace ya bastante la visité y quedé maravillada con su belleza externa e interna. Dicen que es la más antigua de El Vedado. Según supe, el altar y el púlpito de la Parroquia es de madera tallada y se conservan desde su fundación, al igual que la plataforma, los bancos y los vitrales. Nunca fueron reemplazados desde que se construyó la iglesia. Los vitrales son una cosa seria. El edificio tiene detalles que recuerdan la arquitectura gótica y dan esa mágica sensación de la casa de Dios que intenta tocar el cielo.

Cuando uno entra, se encuentra con un lugar que es pura sencillez y recogimiento. Esta es una de las joyas más viejas y queridas de ese barrio del Vedado. Muchos la conocen simplemente como “la Parroquia de Línea”, y no es para menos, porque ahí mismito lleva más de un siglo echando raíces. La cosa se concretó gracias a los donativos de los propios vecinos del Vedado, que se pusieron las pilas para tener su propia iglesia. Como dato curioso puedo decirles que con 74 metros de altura, este es el templo religioso más alto de Cuba y una de las grandes obras de la arquitectura neogótica en el Caribe. El altar en su interior está presidido por una imagen del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús tallada en madera.

Considerada una joya del Vedado, es un patrimonio en peligro que conserva su imponente estructura original. Lamentablemente, no todo es color de rosa. Desde hace años esta iglesia ha estado en un estado de deterioro que parte el alma. La fachada se cae a pedazos, hay carteles que dicen que está “Prohibido el paso. PELIGRO”, y los vitrales y la estructura han sufrido el paso del tiempo y la falta de mantenimiento. Es una lástima que un patrimonio tan valioso esté así, pero la comunidad de fieles sigue ahí, firme, celebrando sus misas y sus procesiones, como la del Corpus Christi en mayo, que es toda una tradición.

Así que ya saben, si andan por el Vedado y se topan con esa torre neogótica que se asoma entre los árboles y edificios de Línea, muy cerca del Teatro Mella y frente con frenta a la Casa del Alba, no pases de largo. Dale una oportunidad. Esa iglesia no es solo un templo: es un pedazo de la historia de La Habana y de Cuba, un lugar donde se han mezclado la fe, el arte y la vida misma de un barrio que nunca deja de sorprender. Y eso, como diría cualquiera, no es poca cosa.

Today I want to tell you about one of the many emblematic sites of Havana. A place that does not go unnoticed by anyone because of its size and majesty. It was one of the buildings that most impressed me when I moved to the capital, so I visited it more than once. On Calle Línea, between C and D, is the quiet parish of the Sacred Heart of Jesus of Vedado and Carmelo. Some time ago its side door used to always be open; that is no longer the case these days. I visited it quite a while ago and was amazed by its external and internal beauty. They say it is the oldest in Vedado. From what I learned, the altar and the pulpit of the Parish are made of carved wood and have been preserved since its founding, as have the platform, the pews, and the stained-glass windows. They have never been replaced since the church was built. The stained-glass windows are something serious. The building has details that recall Gothic architecture and give that magical sensation of the house of God trying to touch the sky.

When you enter, you find a place that is pure simplicity and recollection. This is one of the oldest and most beloved jewels of that Vedado neighborhood. Many know it simply as “the Parish of Línea,” and no wonder, because right there it has been putting down roots for more than a century. The project came about thanks to donations from the Vedado residents themselves, who got their act together to have their own church. As a curious fact, I can tell you that with 74 meters of height, this is the tallest religious temple in Cuba and one of the great works of Neo-Gothic architecture in the Caribbean. The altar inside is presided over by an image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus carved in wood.

Considered a jewel of Vedado, it is an endangered heritage site that preserves its imposing original structure. Unfortunately, not everything is rosy. For years this church has been in a state of deterioration that is heartbreaking. The facade is falling apart, there are signs that say “No entry. DANGER,” and the stained-glass windows and the structure have suffered the passage of time and lack of maintenance. It is a shame that such a valuable heritage site is like this, but the community of faithful remains there, firm, celebrating its Masses and its processions, such as the Corpus Christi procession in May, which is quite a tradition.

So now you know: if you are in Vedado and come across that Neo-Gothic tower peeking out among the trees and buildings on Línea, very near the Teatro Mella and right across from the Casa del Alba, don’t just pass by. Give it a chance. That church is not just a temple: it is a piece of the history of Havana and Cuba, a place where faith, art, and the very life of a neighborhood that never ceases to surprise have been mixed. And that, as anyone would say, is no small thing.
