We have something called a pine sawyer that is much the same shape as your insect but not that colour.

I think of it as a northern "scrub" tree but it's unique. During my research I read that it was valued as a lawn specimen and I was wondering where as I have only ever seen one on a lawn.

The really odd looking one is a type of passion flower.

I'm in Ottawa, Canada and my rhubarb was in such a sunny place that it bolted each year before I could harvest stalks. I got rid of it too.

What an interesting idea. I suppose the only concern would be providing habitat for mosquito larvae but probably not in a very dry area.
