Hello dear friends of the Hive community, I hope you are doing well!

About a month ago, I wrote an article about my affection for black coffee, as well as my journey to manage my consumption and find a balance between appreciation and moderation.

Whether you're a passionate coffee lover or simply drink it to wake up in the morning, it's essential to understand the effects of this beverage on our health. In this article, I will share with you why it's important to consume coffee in moderation and, most importantly, why you should avoid drinking it on an empty stomach.

It's undeniable that coffee is an integral part of our daily routines. For many of us, the day doesn't really start until we've savored that first cup. I want to emphasize that coffee, when consumed in moderation (one to two cups a day), can offer health benefits. It is rich in antioxidants and contains caffeine, a substance known for its stimulating and energizing effects.

However, problems arise when we consume coffee excessively or on an empty stomach. Drinking more than three to four cups a day or consuming coffee without having eaten can have negative effects on our health. Let's start by examining why drinking coffee on an empty stomach can be problematic.

For many people, it has become customary to get up, brew their coffee, and go to work without having breakfast. Some choose this routine as part of intermittent fasting, thinking that coffee doesn't break the fast. Others simply don't like eating in the morning.

Coffee stimulates the production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach, a very acidic substance that helps digest food. When you drink coffee on an empty stomach, this acid has no food to digest, which can lead to heartburn, bloating, and even inflammation of the stomach lining, potentially leading to gastritis.

Moreover, consuming coffee without food can cause a rapid rise in caffeine levels in the blood, leading to a sudden increase in energy followed by a sharp drop. This is comparable to consuming sugar: eating sugar alone causes a rapid rise in blood sugar followed by a quick drop, which can lead to sudden fatigue.

To avoid these energy crashes, I recommend consuming foods rich in protein and fat for breakfast rather than carbohydrate-rich foods. This helps maintain a more consistent energy level throughout the morning.

An interesting example is "bulletproof coffee," a drink where fat (like coconut oil or butter) is added to coffee. This combination slows the absorption of caffeine and maintains more stable energy. If you have trouble eating in the morning, try adding a spoonful of butter or coconut oil to your coffee. It may seem strange at first, but it's very effective.

When choosing your coffee, always opt for organic coffee to avoid pesticides and maximize health benefits. Additionally, prefer whole beans that you grind yourself to avoid oxidation, which can degrade the antioxidants and other nutrients present in coffee.
