I created an edit before, the link to that is below. It was a simple edit for a short video where we added music, a few small cuts, and used a wipe transition. That part is done.
Breaking Down A Simple Edit
Now normally a short needs text to immediately tell the user what is going on, or it just creates a version of nothing in front of them. Without it the viewer is guessing, and guessing is the fastest way to lose someone in the first two seconds.
So the next step is text. Keep it simple, bold, and add a shadow so it sits on top of the video instead of blending into it. Put it in there early. For about two to seven seconds it stays static, it does not move or change. After that it shifts depending on context clues. For this one I added words like composite and matter to tell the user what is actually happening in the frame at that moment.
It sounds like a lot when you write it out, but for this simple edit the whole thing only took me ten minutes.
