32 Fahrenheit. That was the temperature on my car gauge when I hopped in the car Sunday morning to head to the bakery for my shift. That kind of cold isn't unheard of up this way, but still, it isn't a common happening this time of year.
But thankfully, all my hard work paid off, and I didn't lose one, single plant! SQUEE!
Two days in a row, I baked all day, came home, spread barriers, got up, baked, removed barriers, replaced barriers, repeat.
Did I mention that I am a tad tired right meow?
However, I am an ecstatic sort of tired. That kind of post chaos contentment that one attains when they reach the end of some sort of emergency. Sigh.
Today, as I wandered around doing little chores, marveling at how cold it still is out, I realized that I was feeling pretty blessed.
When I cook up a pot of my 1500 Year Old Cave beans this fall, I will smile when I reflect on how I saved their tender little emerging from the soil lives on Father's Day Weekend in June.
My corn and green beans will also be reminded periodically of the tale. It will probably be relayed by Harold, who doesn't seem to know how to actually go about his business in a quiet manner, especially at 4:30 AM, much to my kid's chagrin.
Frost survival tales aside, things are looking pretty awesome around here, my broom corn and pollenless Pro-cut sunflowers decided to make an appearance, the chive blossoms make me smile every time I step off the front porch, and the peonies, well, they often leave me at a loss for words.
They are just so prettimous!
Speaking pretty things, the yarrow around my house is about to explode, so flower cutting and drying season is about to commence. The garlic is nearing the end of its scaping time, so in about three weeks there will be garlic bulbs to harvest and cure, and holy bumper crop, is the lavender ever looking awesome.
In fact, I am starting to wonder, like I do every year, just how I am going to get to it all.
And of course I am loving every homesteading moment as usual. I just need an occasional Kat-nap here and there...
