I have a few problems with what he said.
As you said, he's a Bitcoin maximalist.
For one thing, it's still not easy to send money via Bitcoin. Depends on how much you're sending as to how easy it is though. To a large degree, this is because of the people in Bitcoin resisting change and wanting to keep their magic internet money as magic numbers go brr money. It's a hell of a lot easier to send a lot of other different cryptos, including Hive. Even LTC, which is pretty close to BTC, is easier to send. Of course, when you compare it to wire transfers and things like Paypal, it's a damn sight easier, and often cheaper, to send money. Depends a lot on how much you're sending and where though.
But it's cheaper and easier as a Layer 2 token. In large part because they are resisting change. They don't want it to be easy for people to use as an actual currency. So it won't be.
But he specifically said "safest" and "most secure". He may of been referring to issues with government and private companies causing issues. Which in that regard, BTC is better than many other ways. Not better than other cryptos though. To a large degree it is still very hard to send BTC for the average novice, and it's not secure because it require safe custody of your keys that many people are simply not good at.
Just typing in the long addresses and keys is a nightmare. And if you get them wrong, you're fucked.
But QR codes do make that easier. Of course, you could scan a QR code and it not be what you expected at all. Someone could replace the QR code with their own with a bit of subterfuge.
There's also the problem of stability and volatility. This is in part because they aren't more willing to adapt, so Bitcoin doesn't get more adoption.
These problems and others could be fixed or improved tomorrow with a hard fork, which they likely won't do.
They like their money go brr machine more than a utility coin.
Crypto in general is very useful...as long as we have the internet and computers. Which recently I have come to question. Those in power are ignoring problems and AI has created a bunch of Luddites that are lying about numbers and associating problems created by corporations with AI and computers. Those same people lie about the numbers with crypto using power and creating heat.
Massive violent upheaval and climate catastrophes put everything in question, not just crypto.
Sorry for the long reply. It got away from me.
Edit: And totally forgot to mention the centralized corporations. I think they're a problem of the current form of capitalism. The internet did not need them to be created tho. It was created by academics wanting to share knowledge. If anything they corrupted it.
You are right that they wouldn't and can't create decentralized anything. They created Paypal instead.
It is kinda funny though how many capitalists and libertarians are in crypto when it goes so hard against centralization, the core of corporations and modern capitalism.
