I am not known for playing by the rules when it comes to photographing the sky. thirds, lines, composition; I just tend to sacrifice those guidelines when there is something I like better. This photo and this sunset represent the case for that. I want to share my reasoning, and who knows, maybe you end up agreeing with me.
I am a fan of sunsets not matter how cliché it might sound. I love the colors, shapes, and the faintly aspect of it. It is just ours for a second; then it rapidly changes into night veil, and we have to wait for the next day to bring this present. Although, it will be completely different. I believe that is the beauty of a sunset. It is like a state or story in social media that fades in 24hrs. This one can fade in 24 seconds.

Anyways, Look at this second image. It is a straight forward photo (to the best of conditions at least) of the same sunset as the cover image of this post. It does not respect complete the thirds rule, but it gives a more balanced approach. Why would I choose the cover over this one? well, the second photo is great too; it captures the same horizon, it exhibits all that is in frame in the in other photo too. The only thing about it is lines, yes, lines.

You can see in this shot the cloud pattern is not completely messy. It appears to point towards t sun in a curvy manner. If you look closely, you can see imaginary lines or directions created by the cloud pattern.

Now, look at the same cover photo with some help. Can you see the patterns now? When I look at this photo, I feel everything is spinning towards the sun. I feels like I am being pulled in the direction of this sunset; like a dragging force pulling me in! It doesn't feel as much in the straight up photo of the same sunset. That slight feeling of spinning and pulling is created by the lines. In this angle, the lines created by the clouds and horizon line are convex. The clouds' ends finish just over the sun too. It feels like waves; curvy lines descending towards the horizon. I love that feeling, and it is only achieved by a change in the angle. I now it disrespects some rules and guidelines, but I find the sacrifice worth it. Do you?
Ahora, mira la misma foto de portada con algo de ayuda. ¿Puedes ver los patrones ahora? Cuando miro esta foto, siento que todo gira hacia el sol. Siento que estoy siendo jalado en la dirección de esta puesta de sol; como una fuerza de arrastre tirando de mí! No se siente tanto en la foto directa de la misma puesta de sol. Sometimes, we just want to capture everything in a photo. It is not always possible, but we try. This photo shows greatly the previous pattern that clouds had before the sunset ended. I felt like a wing spread widely in the sky. This photo was taken with horizontal balance, but changing the angle also gave intensity to the cloud display. We can choose either approach, but it is not completely wrong to sacrifice certain aspects for another ones. That is the art behind photography I believe.
A veces, solo queremos capturar todo en una foto. No siempre es posible, pero lo intentamos. Esta foto muestra en gran medida el patrón anterior que tenían las nubes antes de que terminara la puesta del sol. Me sentí como un ala extendida ampliamente en el cielo. Esta foto fue tomada con equilibrio horizontal, pero cambiar el ángulo también le dio intensidad a la visualización de la nube. Podemos elegir cualquiera de los dos enfoques, pero no está del todo mal sacrificar ciertos aspectos por otros. Ese es el arte detrás de la fotografía, creo.
Quick note on editing. I use Snapseed frequently as I mention at the end of many posts. Sometimes a phone camera cannot capture completely what it is actually going on in the sky in terms of light and color. See the original photo and how I made some changes. I manipulated saturation, contrast, warmth, exposure, ambience, and highlights. I needed the sunset not to look so pale because in reality it was not like that. So, in general I intensified the elements to give a more natural, real-life look to the image. THat with a few accentuated details of course.
Nota rápida sobre la edición. Uso Snapseed con frecuencia como menciono al final de muchas publicaciones. A veces, la cámara de un teléfono no puede capturar completamente lo que realmente está sucediendo en el cielo en términos de luz y color. Vea la foto original y cómo hice algunos cambios. Manipulé la saturación, el contraste, la calidez, la exposición, el ambiente y las luces. Necesitaba que la puesta de sol no se viera tan pálida porque en realidad no era así. Así que, en general, intensifiqué los elementos para darle a la imagen un aspecto más natural y real. Eso con algunos detalles acentuados, por supuesto.
