While enjoying a morning java lakeside, the calm clear waters revealed what appeared to be a stick on the bottom. Astute obsevation indicated it was slowly approaching my location. As it neared one could recognize four limbs and beautiful bushy red gills. This one was approximately 7 inches in length.
Mudpuppies are considered a threatened species. The mudpuppy officially is an aquatic salamander. They can grow up to 15 inches in length, and live 20 years duration. Interesting fact about mudpuppies is that they are usually found in shallower water, but have been found in depths of 100 ft . deep. Their diet is mostly macro invertebrates, crayfish, snails, worms and small fish.
If you are fortunate enough please only observe and not handle. Be grateful to have been lucky enough to observe this fascinating creature.
