Sometimes, the shortest stories leave the deepest scars. I recently read “The Nightingale and the Rose,” a six-page tale written by the brilliant Oscar Wilde. Although labeled a fairy tale, it is actually a heartbreaking social satire that forces us to face the ugliness of human selfishness. The premise seems simple: a young student is desperate because he cannot find a red rose for the young woman he is “in love” with. Without that flower, she will not dance with him. Seeing his suffering, a little nightingale, a hopeless romantic who believes that love is the meaning of life, decides to help him.

A veces, las historias más cortas son las que dejan las cicatrices más profundas. Recientemente leí "El Ruiseñor y la Rosa", un cuento de apenas seis páginas escrito por el brillante Oscar Wilde. Aunque se etiqueta como un cuento de hadas, la realidad es que es una sátira social desgarradora que nos obliga a mirar de frente la fealdad del egoísmo humano. La premisa parece simple: un joven estudiante está desesperado porque no encuentra una rosa roja para la joven de quien está "enamorado". Sin esa flor, ella no bailará con él. Al ver su sufrimiento, un pequeño ruiseñor, un romántico empedernido que cree que el amor es el sentido de la vida, decide ayudarlo.

What follows is one of the most beautiful and cruel scenes in literature: to create that red rose in winter, the bird must sing with its breast pressed against a thorn, allowing it to pierce its heart until its blood stains the petals. The nightingale gives its life for an ideal, while the student, sheltered by his logic and his books, does not even understand the language of sacrifice. I must emphasize that what hurt me most about this rereading was not the death of the nightingale, but the coldness of the outcome. Wilde presents us with three levels of “love” or interest represented by the nightingale: pure love, absolute sacrifice, and unconditional devotion. On the other hand, there is the student, who represents intellectual whim. He believes he loves, but at the first sign of rejection, he discards the feeling and returns to his books on logic, calling love “something impractical.” And finally, there is the young woman, who represents materialism. She prefers the jewels sent to her by the son of a chamberlain because they cost more than a flower.

El ruiseñor entrega su vida por un ideal, mientras el estudiante, refugiado en su lógica y sus libros, ni siquiera comprende el lenguaje del sacrificio. Debo resaltar, que lo que más me dolió de esta relectura no fue la muerte del ruiseñor, sino la frialdad del desenlace. Wilde nos presenta tres niveles de "amor" o interés que es el ruiseñor, este representa el amor puro, el sacrificio absoluto y la entrega sin condiciones. Por otra lado, está el estudiante; quien representa el capricho intelectual. Él cree amar, pero ante el primer rechazo, descarta el sentimiento y vuelve a sus libros de lógica, llamando al amor "algo poco práctico". Y finalmente, la joven quien representa el materialismo. Prefiere las joyas que le envió el hijo de un chambelán porque cuestan más que una flor.

Now, my experience was a mixture of admiration for Wilde's prose and a profound sense of helplessness. The author poses an uncomfortable question: Is it worth sacrificing yourself for someone who lacks the spiritual depth to understand your value? Despite its sadness, I recommend this reading for several reasons; in just 10 minutes of reading, Wilde manages to shake your values more than 500-page novels. In addition, the use of colors (the white of the moon, the red of blood, the green of the garden) creates an incredible visual atmosphere. It then serves as a necessary reminder of the importance of choosing wisely to whom we give our “song” and our efforts.

El autor nos lanza una pregunta incómoda: ¿Vale la pena sacrificarse por alguien que no tiene la profundidad espiritual para entender nuestro valor? A pesar de su tristeza, recomiendo esta lectura por varias razones; en solo 10 minutos de lectura, Wilde logra sacudir tus valores más que novelas de 500 páginas. Además, el uso de los colores (el blanco de la luna, el rojo de la sangre, el verde del jardín) crea una atmósfera visual increíble. Para luego crear un recordatorio necesario sobre la importancia de elegir bien a quién entregamos nuestra "canción" y nuestro esfuerzo.

In short, this book, The Nightingale and the Rose, is a masterpiece about gratitude and emotional blindness. If you're looking for a comforting story, this isn't the place; but if you're looking for a story that will wake you up and make you appreciate the sacrifices of others, you should read it today. My rating: 10/10. A classic that never goes out of style because, unfortunately, lack of empathy is still a current issue.

Si buscas una historia que te consuele, este no es el lugar; pero si buscas una historia que te haga despertar y valorar el sacrificio ajeno, debes leerlo hoy mismo. Mi calificación: 10/10. Un clásico que nunca pasa de moda porque, lamentablemente, la falta de empatía sigue siendo un tema actual.
