I took this while hiking in John Muir National Forest.

I was mesmerized by this tree stump. Everything about it from the spiral patterns of the cracks, to the brilliant color, to the many lumpy knots caught my attention. I had to stop and take a picture, and ponder for a moment how this natural masterpiece came to be.
