Steem Hop is one of those games that when you first open it on http://steemhop.org you will think ah this is just a small kiddies game, because the graphics are very simple with low poly cars and small rocks and trees and a small white cube as the main character, but once you start playing you will understand that it is actually very addictive and can hold you for hours without you even knowing. I started playing it just to pass time and I ended up playing for almost an hour straight trying to beat my top score of 93, the game looks like Crossy Road but it has its own style, you have a desert map that is orange with cactus and small hills, then you have roads with orange and purple cars moving fast, then you have rivers with brown logs floating and train tracks with trains that pass. Your only job is to hop, hop forward, hop left, hop right, and avoid dying, it sounds easy but it is not easy at all because one mistake and you are back to zero and that big STEEM HOP title will show again on the blue screen.
What makes Steem Hop interesting is the way it tests your patience and your timing, you cannot just be tapping anyhow and expecting to go far, you have to actually wait and look at the movement pattern. Like if you watch my gameplay in the video I posted, you will see that I died at -2, -1, 0, 1, 2 several times because I was rushing, especially on the road part, those purple cars are very fast and they come in groups so if you try to cross without checking both sides you will get hit and your cube will be flattened, the same with the orange cars, they are slower but they still can catch you if you are not careful. Then there is the river part, you have to jump exactly on the brown logs that are floating on the blue water, if you jump too early or too late you will fall inside the water and die, and sometimes the logs are far from each other so you need to time two hops quickly. I also saw that there are gold coins on the way, like the 299 coins I have at the top right, those coins tempt you to take risky jumps, you will see a coin in the middle of the road and you will want to go for it and then a car will hit you, that is how I lost my run that got to 12.
Another thing I like about Steem Hop is how fast it restarts, you don't have to watch long ads or go through many menus, once you die you just see that blue screen with STEEM HOP written in big orange and white 3D text and a play button in the middle, you tap it and you are back instantly in the desert, that fast restart is what makes you say just one more try and before you know it you have played 20 times. The controls are also very simple, you just tap where you want to go, no joystick or complicated buttons, and there are only two buttons at the bottom right for music and sound if you want to mute it. There is also a small character that appears on the train tracks sometimes, a girl with black hair and red shoes, I don't know if you are supposed to avoid her or if she is just decoration, but I always try to avoid her because I feel like she will make me die too. The whole game is browser based so you don't need to download anything, just go to http://steemhop.org and it will load and you can play even with low data.
If you are looking for a game to play when you are bored in traffic or waiting for someone or you just want to clear your head, I will honestly recommend Steem Hop, it is not a heavy game that will drain your battery or need high phone specs, it works on any phone and it is very light. It helps you improve your reflex and focus because you have to be watching three things at once, cars, logs, trains, and still be planning your next hop. The feeling when you finally pass the road and river and train tracks and enter the green area with trees is very satisfying, you feel like you actually achieved something even though it is just a small cube hopping. My top is still 93 and I am still grinding to beat it, I know I can get to 100 or more if I stay patient and stop chasing coins, so if you try it let me know what your top score is and how far you got, I am sure you will get addicted too.
