Steemhop is one of those games that looks very simple from the outside but when you actually start playing it you will realize how annoying and addictive it can be at the same time. The game opens with this big bold 3D text that says STEEM HOP in orange and cream color on a plain light blue background, and at the top you can see your current score on the left and your coins and your TOP score on the right, in my case my top was 33 and I had like 295 coins at the start and I was trying to beat it. The character you control is just a small white cube that looks like a block of sugar or a marshmallow with a red stripe on top, very minimal design. The whole map is like a desert highway with orange sand, small green trees, little rock formations that look like stacked stones, and then you have roads and train tracks that you must cross. It is basically like Crossy Road but with its own style and it is playable directly on your browser at http://steemhop.org without downloading anything, which is why I was just playing it on Safari on my phone.
The main gameplay is all about timing and patience, you just tap to hop forward one block at a time and you have to avoid getting hit by cars and trains. The first obstacle is always the road with those purple and orange cars moving left and right very fast, you can't just rush, you have to wait and see the gap then hop. You can see in my video there were moments I got hit at score 0 just because I was not patient, the purple car just slammed into my cube and the game ended instantly and took me back to that STEEM HOP title screen. Then after you pass the road you get to the train tracks, and honestly the trains are even harder because they are long, they come with a warning and there is that woman with the stop sign at the crossing. Sometimes you have two train tracks back to back so you have to cross one, wait in the middle, then cross the second one, and if you stay too long in the middle you might still get hit. In one of my runs I managed to get to 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 points, that was my best run in the clip, I was dodging cars and trains back to back and even picked up a coin that moved me from 297 to 298 to 299 coins. The coins are floating gold coins on the road and they are worth collecting.
What I like about Steemhop is that it is not trying to be a big complicated game with story or levels, it is just a pure endless hopper that tests your reflex. You have only three buttons at the bottom, on the left there is a character icon, on the right you have music and sound on/off, and in the middle when you die there is a play button to restart quickly. That is why I kept restarting so many times in the video, you can see I died at 0, then -1, then 1, then 7, then 0 again, then 2, 3, 8, 0, 0, 2, 7, 9, 10, 17, 18, 19, the game just puts you straight back in. It has that one more try feeling where you tell yourself okay this time I will be more careful, but then you get greedy and try to cross two cars at once and you die again. The visuals are very clean, bright colors, no lag, runs smooth on mobile browser, and the sound effects are also satisfying when you hop.
If you are someone who likes to play games to kill time or to compete with your friends on who can get the highest score, Steemhop is perfect for that. My top is still 33 and I have not been able to beat it even after all those tries in the video, I keep dying around 17 to 19 because once you get further the traffic becomes more crowded and the timing becomes tighter. It is the kind of game you can open during break, in class, in the bus, anywhere, just go to http://steemhop.org and start hopping. It will frustrate you but at the same time you will enjoy it because every new high score feels like an achievement. I definitely recommend trying it if you have not played it before, just be ready to lose many times before you finally cross that 33 mark.
