I thought Alfarell was the alternate name for earth. That the humans of that world had blown themselves to kingdom come with nukes, and Wraithvine was there, though his people were in hiding, and as the world healed and became safe for many races to come out of hiding, is when he really began his wanderings? I remember one story where it talked of a story of a city that was destroyed, one that "always had a green glow and the area was unlivable and made people ill" I.e. irradiated? And it's a warning not to drive Wraithvine too far, or to go down the path of destruction?

And I did read the whole thing. Including the whole "Hero of Destiny" thing.
