To reside in Ghana currently, a person鈥檚 financial problems worsen with each passing day. Daily price hikes in fundamental commodities like food, petroleum products, electricity and water is nothing new to any Ghanaian.
We are ranked 1st in Africa鈥檚 top 10 underperforming economies with an annual inflation rate of a shocking 54.1% coupled with an exchange rate of GHC 12 to $1 ; which was trading for GHC 9 to $1 by the end of December,2022.
The government just sits unconcerned and seems to enjoy the struggle of the ordinary Ghanaian. There are no increases in the salaries of workers but prices of utilities keep rising.
As at yesterday, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission added a 30% on the cost of utilities ranging from water to food, electricity and petroleum products.
Meanwhile nothing is been done by the government of Ghana to cushion Ghanaians in this hard times from these price hikes: they rather make useless laws which is of no use to the average Ghana and rather causes them more harm.
For example A bill was sent to parliament for approval for the construction of a National Cathedral. The cost of building this national cathedral would a whopping $400 million.
Meanwhile there are children in deprived communities who do not have access to basic social amenities like schools and hospitals; I don鈥檛 even want to talk about portable drinking water because I鈥檓 pissed off.
Can you believe there are some people who have never seen bottled drinking water before 馃槫?
What even makes Ghanaians angry concerning this country issue of the national cathedral is the fact that we would have to borrow money as a country in order to complete the project.
The government always tell us there is no money but can lobby for funding to fund useless projects like this. The allowances of teachers have not been paid, National Service personnel have not been paid their salaries, students in the free Senior High School program do not have food to eat.
It seems we are living under a dictatorship form of government rather than the democracy we preach.
It is my humble prayer that the government would start to address the plights of Ghanaians and also do something to bring the inflation rate down.
