We are back to show the last bits of this project. It's been a blast to go over a new type of build and learn a thing or two about percussion instruments.
Let's dive in on the remaining parts of these Bongos!
Set it up!

Before we start with the finish, we need to trim the borders of the top with our router. We'll use a rounding bit to make the edges round. After we have addressed this portion of the work, we'll move ahead to sanding the exterior of the Bongos.
We'll use sandpaper up to 220 grit. As the material we are use is made of layers of wood, we cannot be too aggressive with our sanding lest we want to compromise one of the layers and ruin the build.
It's just a matter of sanding carefully until the surface is smooth to start applying to finish.

This first build is going to have a simple finish. It will just be some pore filler. We'll go ahead and apply sealant. First, we'll have the logo on the top to identify our work. I made this one with a silver sharpie metallic marker.
Once we have the logo, we can mix our sealant and thinner to the desired thickness and start applying it on the Bongos with some cotton. We need to let each coat dry for at least 30 minutes before applying the next one. We finish this process when we see the pores of the wood are all filled up.
And the final step is sanding this finish once we have let it dry for at least 12 hours.
This we have a finished instrument!
Aftermath
It's been an interesting project to move away from plucked-strings instruments. The build is quite simple but it isn't away from it's own challenges. Having clamps is crucial to speed up the process, but being creative helps a lot to tackle this problem.
It remains yet to be seen if these instruments will have any people interested and some actual buyers, but that will come in the future. For now, it's amaizng to add something new to the repertoire.

Estamos de vuelta con este proyecto para mostrar las últimas partes de su proceso de construcción. Ha sido una experiencia muy interesante tomar el reto de un tipo de construcción diferente a lo usual y esto me ha llevado a aprender una cosa o dos sobre los instrumentos de percusión.
¡Vamos a entrar en materia y ver las últimas partes de todo lo que faltaba para terminar estos Bongós!
Preparación

Antes de comenzar con el acabado del instrumento, tenemos que redondear los bordes de la tapa. Para esto, emplearemos nuestra fresadora y una fresa para redondear esquinas. Luego de completar esta tarea, podemos empezar a lijar el exterior de estos Bongós.
Para lijar, solo usaremos granos de lija hasta el 220. Como el compuesto está hecho de laminas de manera pegadas una a otra, no es muy recomendable lijar mucho porque podemos debilitar alguna de las capas y comprometer la estructura del instrumento.
Lijaremos con cuidado hasta tener una superficie lisa para aplicar el acabado.
Acabado

Está primer instrumento va a tener un acabado simple. Solo vamos a rellenar el grano de la madera. Así que solo haremos uso de sellador. Primero, tenemos que colocar el logo de la marca en la tapa del instrumento. Así identificamos este trabajo. Este paso lo haremos con un marcador metálico por el momento.
Con nuestro logo en su lugar, podemos mezclar el sellador y el thinner hasta lograr la consistencia deseada y empezar a aplicarlo con un pedazo de algodón. Debemos permitir que cada capa seque por al menos 30 min antes de aplicar la siguiente. Repetiremos el proceso hasta conseguir rellenar los poros de la madera.
El último paso es lijar esta capa de sellador para emparejarla luego de haber dejado que seque por al menos 12 horas.
Y así, completamos este instrumento.
Conclusión
Este ha sido un proyecto muy interesante sin lugar a dudas. Salir de mi zona de confort en los instrumentos de cuerda pulsada fue un reto que no estuvo exento de dificultades. Tener prensas es esencial para poder trabajar rápido, pero algo de creatividad nos puede ayudar a seguir adelante aunque no tengamos las prensas necesarias.
Todavía falta ver si estos instrumentos tendrán compradores, pero eso es un tema a futuro. Por ahora, voy a disfrutar el proceso de aprendizaje y haber añadido un instrumento nuevo al repertorio del taller.
