Today I thought of writing something different and that's about sharing my hobby for vintage and treasure hunting. Finding the gem in the sea of vintage or even modern artefacts, either in flea markets or online, has fascinated me for quite a while. Hunting the rush of discovering something valuable or everyone else is passing by or simply being first to buy some vintage piece while others are inquiring for it, is quite a thrill for me and pleasant as well. There is something in the search for an overlooked thing and to discover its history, its use and simply read and learn more about it. Not only that it might have a higher value than the one acquired, but I like to document about it and educate myself. This is another form of learning and with each piece of new information I feel that I am becoming more knowledgeable about some antiques and can spot them more easily and the sea of common things. Not that I have strike it reach, but I think some things I bought might be valuable to a higher value than paid for.
As it happens just yesterday I bought two artefacts and I will soon present and write about them once I receive the packages. What I like about this treasure hunting is that I have started with some small and specific things that are worth few Euros. These are small amounts, but I have soon learned that things for which you pay just few Euros cannot go very high on more specialized markets. So from few Euros I upped my game and I am now in the mark of 10 - 50 Euros per purchase which is a moderate sum for my budget. But at these price points, I think there are more valuable items that can hide more history, use and value. Next, let me tell you what kind of items I am looking for.
Whenever I visit a flea market, some antiques shops or hunting online I am looking for:
I approached these categories as I thought they are tangential with art and that I can showcase with the others and are more low budget. On some of my buying I feel that I have thrown the money away, on others I still have hope they are valuable. Besides the fact that I buy what I like, I believe that in time I will develop a sense of what's truly valuable and has historical meaning. There are a lot of things without any value on which even myself I would pay others just to take them out of my hands, so it is import to filter what I am buying and not to get hoarding useless things.
I like losing time watching vintage things like mentioned above and it simply relaxes me. Maybe the fact that all day long I am using my brain in software development, it needs some easy activities like treasure hunting for vintage and antiques. I don't know if this is something you like to do, but on me it has a positive impact and I can disconnect from the issues in the real world and transport myself into other times. Sometimes after going through flea markets I get disappointed that I didn't find something meaningful, but the hunt feeling remain on and I get going after few days. Anyhow, in the incoming days I will post about what I bought and ask you what you think about the given items.
