I like to call myself a serial traveller, but you could honestly call me a travel addict. Given that someone who is addicted to something will continue to pursue their addiction even when it causes issues in their life. While I don't lose any sleep over this, my traveling has made it next to impossible to hold down a steady job so most of my work is done on my own, which is totally fine by me. But I do see the value in learning to work a 9-5, which I haven't really done.
I have a unique situation in that I have plenty of money at my disposal and am only 20 years old so I still live with my parents. I took a year off from school in order to travel. If I get any interest, I will share some of the methods I've used to travel on the cheap.
About a month ago I was sitting in Madison Square Park (I live in New York) with a friend and decided that I was bored and needed to travel somewhere. I booked a flight to Medellin, Colombia the following week and found a cool hostel to stay in. I spent $400 on the airfare (roundtrip) and $12 a night at the hostel, adding up to a total of $520.
I always say that the only thing stopping most people from traveling is having enough free time. I took a year off from college in order to travel. In the past year I have been to the following places:
Colombia (1 week)
Southern California (2 weeks)
Puerto Rico (1 week)
Miami/Tampa (1 week)
Palm Beach (1 week)
Tokyo (3 days)
Hong Kong (10 days)
Havana, Cuba (6 weeks)
Medellin, Colombia (10 days)
Denver (1 week)
Tucson (2 weeks)
I've had to work on my side businesses during my time in New York so that's why I wasn't able to travel more. I also don't enjoy traveling for more than 2 weeks because I like to sleep in my own bed and de-compress between trips, so I avoid the traditional 3 month-long backpacking trip that many students go on.
