🇵🇱🇩🇪 Complicated Relations between Poland and Germany
After Ukrainian missiles fell on Polish territory, Berlin offered to send Patriot anti-missile systems to Poland, as well as to help protect the Polish sky with German Eurofighter fighters.
Warsaw's initial response was frankly enthusiastic: "I have accepted with satisfaction the offer of the German Defense Minister regarding the deployment of additional Patriot missile launchers in our country," Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak said, adding that he "will offer to place these systems on the border with Ukraine."
But then Jarosław Kaczyński, chairman of Poland's ruling Law and Justice party, intervened, and Warsaw's tone changed dramatically. After Germany's refusal to deploy Patriot complexes on the territory of Ukraine (instead of Poland), Kaczyński questioned Germany's authority as a NATO ally.
Kaczyński's party is trying to boost its ratings in opi nion polls ahead of next year's parliamentary elections by attacking Germany. They are demanding reparations from Berlin, accusing it of siding with Brussels in a rule of law dispute that caused the EU to suspend payments to Poland, and attacking its status in NATO.
