Chapter 3
So here I am 20 years old and working in a pharmacy. It was so awesome, no more night shifts, and no more smelling like a burger and French fries. It was all so clean and neat and smelled so nice. I worked with two older lady’s. Vina and Vera. They were such awesome lady’s, and we worked well together. Uncle Gerald sent me on a makeup course, and I started doing make up for Weddings and matric farewell’s. It was the perfect job. I interacted with many people and life was still pretty good.
The pharmacy was set right next to a Kentucky, and many afternoons, I would order a piece of chicken or a bowl of fruit salad, and just sit there and speak to Bob the Indian Branch manager.
One day I went over again for my lunch time chat with Bob, and there I saw a very familiar face serving behind the counter. I knew I know this person, but I could not place him. I asked Bob who he was and he told me his name. It then clicked that this man went to school with me. I just entered high school and he was in standard eight at the time. I always fancy’d him in the secret, but he was terribly shy, and so was I. Long story short, we moved to the Free State after my first year in high school, and I never saw this boy again, until that day in Kentucky.
Bob told me that it is his new manager he employed and that this chap was looking for a place to stay. By then I moved into a bigger house, which was closer to my work which was now in Margate and not in St Michaels On Sea. The kind heart I have, I told him to tell this gentleman to come see me at the pharmacy, so that we can discuss him moving in.
Well the next day came, and as I looked up from the counter, there he was, blue eyes cute little dimples, a smile on his face, and Oh dear, I was hooked. Do you believe in love at first sight? Well I never, until that moment. Seems like he felt the same, because from that moment we saw each other, it only took two weeks before we were married.
I felt in love for the first time, I was happy and content, and I had someone who truly loved me, and who I loved very deeply. Great was the news when two weeks after the whirlwind wedding, I fell pregnant. Another person to fill my life with, and whom I could love. Life could not get any better.
We were very poor. As a manager of Kentucky and a pharmacy assistant, there was not much money between us, but if you are young and in love and happy, money is the last thing you worry about.
My husband got transferred to Kentucky in Matatielle, by then I was already a few months pregnant, and excited to move and start a new life. I had a very difficult pregnancy. As I mentioned before, I had this bad back, and was operated on when I was 16. As my tummy grew, and put strain on my back, things got really bad. I eventually lost all feeling in the lower part of my body, and was rushed to hospital. There they put me in traction, and blessing upon blessing, it worked. I was then allowed to go back home, but stay off my feet.
My husband in the interim started a new job, as a herbal doctor, basically selling herbal medicine. He was not really very happy there, and the money was not very good. He changed jobs so that he was home more evenings to be with me, as I needed more taking care of.
As a result, we had limited money, and I was almost due to give birth. We belonged to a really great church. The people in this church took us under their wing and gave us everything for the baby. A pram full of baby cloths, Glaudina nappies, a cot, you name it, we got it. We were so blessed and so thankful.
A lovely couple Brian and Elrita invited us to go and live with them, as they had a huge home and they were quite wealthy. We were once again counting our blessings. We moved into their home, and about two weeks later, I gave birth to the most beautiful baby girl. We named her Angelia, in short Angel. She was our little angel, so perfect in every way.
She was only about a month old, when my husband felt it was time to move on, he wanted a good job and thought that in the City of Durban he will get better pay, so we thanked Brian and Elrita for their hospitality, packed up our few belongings, and set out onto the next chapter of our lives.
