Monday night, my hands on 10 and 2
I stared into the lanes
Way deep down that freeway
Into the dark blur ahead
And as the near lights came into
Focus, and the far – out
I thought I saw a little gnat
As if frozen in flight
In search of just that something
That gnats search for
And brainless gnats cannot think
But I can, and I imagine
Its little dreams, hopes, and chances
Smashed into the windshield
And wouldn’t it have been so nice
If someone could just push
Their star-studded finger into the screen,
Say: “Yes! This is the one!”
And save you from yourself
Or from the wipers
And as I approached, my unconscious
Mind took the right exit
And delivered me safe back home
And when she opened the door
With a how was your day
All I could think about was wow
What a complete blur
And as she sat me down and fed me
Dinner, it all started becoming
Crystal clear, as if on a count
And we snuggled up to watch
Episode three of something
As if I had never left now
