I've often heard it say that you can't have morality without God or gods. Well, lead you to believe in God in the first place? You're not born believing in god. Something about the stories appealed to you as a child. If you have no sense of morality then these stories about the suffering of others would just slide right off your conscience.
Adversely, if the only reason you believe in doing good things is because you think you're gonna burn in hell then you have no morality.
