AI firms can hit ~99% using clean datasets, synthetic examples, benchmarks, and demos. The very last stretch needs raw, messy human behavior captured at the source.

The last decimal point in safety requires massive real‑world data. That helps explain why only Tesla appears positioned to solve autonomy at scale. AI today faces the same dynamic.

That final stretch—the brutal 99.99999X% tail, driven by rare edge cases from human interactions and unpredictability that synthetic data can't reproduce—will be extremely hard to reach.

Most will get to the point where systems work almost all the time.

As with autonomy, most carmakers will eventually reach about 99% safety.

Production is around ~2M cars/year and rising, all equipped with dual SoC AI4, 8 cameras, redundancy in steering actuation and other systems, high-bandwidth communication, etc

That is combined with proprietary AI4 chips for processing vast amounts of video, or the required spend would probably be about double
