Walk 👟 Day 5: Along Captain’s Pond, Salem, New Hampshire, 3 Oct 2026
On our stroll today, @bitterirony and I remembered seeing a movie long ago called On Golden Pond. I mentioned to him that, to my designer brain, our Captain’s Pond had the aesthetics of the waterfront property featured in the film starring Henry Fonda and Jane Fonda. I said, “I bet you anything On Golden Pond was filmed in New Hampshire.”
We all know that the proper way to solve a pub disagreement is to Google the topic. So, I recorded @bitterirony reading his results, then tidied it up a bit to give you the most interesting bits:
The 1981 film On Golden Pond was filmed primarily on Squam Lake, including Big Squam and Little Squam Lakes, in and around the town of Holderness, New Hampshire. Most of the outdoor and water scenes used the peaceful backdrop of Squam Lake in New Hampshire’s Lakes Region.
The famous lake house was a real, privately owned summer cottage on Squam Lake, leased from a local doctor for the production. The film crew added a second floor to the cottage for filming, and the owner liked the addition so much that he chose to keep it.
One notable exception to the Squam Lake locations was the aerial boating scene in which young Billy drives the boat in circles. That scene was filmed on nearby Lake Winnipesaukee.

In 2015, when @bitterirony was doing legal work in New England, we spent some time on Lake Winnie. I loved paddle boarding there!
Now, after moving house our into storage in Leeds, West Yorkshire, and we’re spending the next few months in New Hampshire, it may be too late in the season for paddle boarding, but certainly not too late to enjoy the colours of the season! 🍁🍂
