I am currently taking part in a woodworking residency for a month in Seiffen, a village in eastern Germany known for woodworking and wooden toys.
At the beginning of the residency, I used a wood lathe for the first time in about a year and a half. I had attended a two days lathe workshop in 2024 and another in 2025, so I had it before. Even so, standing in front of a machine spinning a piece of wood at high speed still made me nervous.
While I was working, the knife I was using to shape a curved surface caught in the wood, and I ended up with a small bruise on my little finger. It reminded me that the machine was, indeed, still a little frightening. After that, I stayed away from the lathe for about a week.
The workshop contains not only lathes, but also various other machines, including a table saw and a large electric planer. Both look intimidating, and they are very loud when running. At first, simply standing beside them made my body tense up a little.
I decided not to force myself to overcome the fear immediately, but to take time and get used to the machines gradually.
After the bruise disappeared and a little more time had passed, I found myself wanting to try the lathe again. I was able to return to it and continue turning wood. I was still afraid of using the knife to create curved surfaces, so I bought a carbide turning tool instead. This time, I felt a little calmer and more comfortable bringing the tool into contact with the spinning wood.
I have also gradually become able to use the table saw. Its loud noise still scares me, but I am beginning to feel more comfortable with it.
As I learned how the machines worked and operated them several times myself slowly, whenever a project required it, the vague fear of something unknown began to fade.
The large electric planer is still too scary for me to use, though 😅
Time has passed quickly, and the residency will end next week. I do not need to learn how to use all the machine during this stay, nor do I need to eliminate my fear completely. I can continue woodworking and gradually become more familiar with these machines over time.
Having our toy-maker mentor and other people around the workshop also gave me a sense of security. Whenever I asked a question, they patiently showed me what to do. Being in that kind of environment also made it easier to say honestly, “To tell the truth, I’m afraid of these large machines.” Then interesting things happened ... As it will be long so I write about this other day.
I gradually began to think, “Yes, I can simply ask for help,” and, “I can try what feels manageable and ask someone for support when I need it.”
Perhaps it is a little like slowly becoming friends with the machines.
I am looking forward to enjoying the final week of my residency.
