Just start with some delegation. It doesn't cost you anything.

This isn't true, btw, the delegated HP won't earn you extra curation rewards which instead go to the project to fund it! You'll still get ~3% APR from the HP you have delegated out but not the ~8.5% APR from curation rewards.
