Many times, when I see people get into a relationship and then I am not into any, I sometimes feel left out. There are times when I will even appear like the odd one among my mates. They pick up their phones and call their loved ones. But on my end, I am fully concentrated on my phone trying to figure out means of earning, or I am watching a movie.
“Hey Abdulqudus,” A friend called my name out of nowhere. Just saw him sitting beside me.
I raised my head, saw him, and smiled.
“How far?” trying to remove his heavy hands tied around my neck. I needed some concentration.
“What are you always doing on your phone?” Abdulganniy questioned his curiosity.
Abdulganniy became a friend since my very first step I took into the barracks with my luggage. He welcomed me with all his heart without knowing who I was, just that he knew that I was a corps member who had just resumed alongside others.
At first, I was in doubt about his kindness, but the moment he made me skip some crucial verification stress. And showed me how to navigate my way, sheltered me in his room, and fed me. I felt his sincerity.
“So Abdulqudus, I never saw you calling or talking about your girlfriend. Why?” He asked in with a funny expression on his face.
I concentrated on what I was doing, not giving him the attention he needed. I knew he would ask again till I freaked out to respond. He was about to blind the screen of my phone with his hands.
“Okay, okay!”
“I don't have a girlfriend, and I am not ready to get into any relationship for now”. I responded.
Not satisfied with my response. He furthered his questions.
“So when will you get married if you don't have anyone you are dating?” He added.
I knew it was about to get more serious than the way the conversation started. So I dropped my phone and centered my attention.
“Abdulganniy! Do you want to know why?” I asked.
“Of course.” Just tell me.
“Is it because of your experience in a relationship?” He asked curiously again.
“No, but I have more reasons to have stood my decision to await the perfect time,” I responded,
“Let me tell you about a relationship I witnessed, at least you get to know that not every relationship ends up with marriage.”
Abdulganniy sat firmly, paying all his attention. I guess he is so eager to know why his friend has no girlfriend and is not ready to have one.
I told him about a relationship I witnessed fifteen years ago. I was still a teenager then. Maybe in my mid-teenage years. We were out to write our exams for admission into the university then. It was my first experience, so I had to be extraordinarily careful.
The registration was swift, I met with some other candidates too. Some of us didn't arrive there together; they came on their own, but we had to leave the registration center together.
A lady, named Rukayat, sat next to me; she is a distant friend of mine. Then beside her was another guy whom I also knew, but not a friend. A decent guy and a beautiful lady. Maybe brought together by fate.
The guy kicked up a conversation with her, and they gradually began to have deeper discussions. I felt he was interested in her, and straight up, he took his shot. Asked for her number and expressed his liking for her.
Wow! That was all I could say in my mind. I witnessed it all.
Over the years, the relationship grew stronger, I got closer than before, and then everyone knew they were both in a relationship. If care is not taken, you might get jealous of them. If he made a post on Facebook, Rukayat would be the first to comment, and vice versa.
Lukman, the handsome and decent guy, got admitted into a higher institution. It’s obvious they were still together till his finals, but then something strange happened. All of a sudden, there was a gap between them. It became obvious that something had happened.
I took the courage to meet with Rukayat, and our conversation led to the reason behind the breakup between them. She was weeping but trying to stay strong because she just couldn’t look back at the years and efforts she put into the relationship. All gone to waste.
Lukman moved on with his life, we saw his marriage invite just a few months after the breakup. So what was wrong? Rukayat opened up at some point, saying he told her he wasn’t interested anymore for no reason. And he found his partner.
“For no reason!” The way I was surprised then after hearing such. So was Abdulganniy.
That’s serious, she had to start all over again, if not for the consolation and encouragement from her parents, she would have gotten into another relationship that wasn't up to three months, and gotten married too. They are both in their different worlds today. I don't know if both are happy with their choices, but I just made it clear that it's not all relationships that lead to marriage.
The first house in the street is not always the best. So when the right time comes, I will also get into a relationship and hope for the best.
Abdulganniy also had a breakup from the relationship he had for four years, and got married to someone else just five months after the breakup.
